“Ocala National Forest 3″, Kathleen Hudspeth, 2021. Water-soluble monotype, paper size 9″ x 7″, image size 5.25″ x 4”; signed verso.

This monotype of mine, “Ocala National Forest 3”, was on view in the Lawrence Arts Center‘s “Celebrate Print” exhibition as part of the Lawrence Print Week 2023 in Lawrence, Kansas. The show is a national exhibition of prints, and was juried by Taro Takizawa.

The show ran from October 27 through November 17 in the Cider Gallery, located at 810 Pennsylvania St.

This work is one of a series of three water-soluble monotypes that I made while I was exploring printmaking methods that were suitable for teaching via Zoom instruction and which would be easy for students to create at home during the Covid remote-learning period.

The method I used (Dura-Lar as a plate, water-soluble Speedball relief inks, watercolor and water-soluble markers to create the image, hand-printed by spoon onto damp-packed paper), turned out to be very accessible and beautiful. Many of my students during that time made some gorgeous works with this method.
